Got a client meeting you are dreading? Is he/she boring? Do they make you want to tear your hair out? Do they frustrate the heck out of you? Before going into this meeting ask yourself one question: what 5 things can I learn from this client today?

Seriously, how well do you know your clients? What 5 takeaways can you acquire from this meeting?

It might be personal things about the client. It might be unique ways they do business. It may be the way they engage with their staff. It may be the way they engage with you.Whatever the case, by learning more about your client you’ll be able to serve them better. You’ll be more prepared to strike up a conversation next time. You may learn something about their business that could help you work with them better. You may even gain some insights that could make you run your business more effectively. Regardless of how long we’ve known our clients we can always learn more.

By asking investigative questions, we’re also displaying strong leadership traits. It’s that classic example of making someone feel like they’re the most important person in the room, by giving them your undivided attention, asking questions, being present and listening. Maya Angelou sums it up beautifully:

“People don’t always remember what you say or even what you do, but they always remember how you made them feel.”

Just because YOU’RE not looking forward to the meeting, doesn’t mean the client feels the same way. Your meeting could even be the highlight of their week.

It’s not about you. It’s about your customer. Always.
